COMMON MATERIALS USED FOR MAKING DENTAL CROWNS

Have you ever wondered what dental crowns are made of? We often take them for granted and don’t really think about the crowns the dentists place in our teeth. To satisfy your curiosity, in this article we’ll be elaborating on the resources and materials needed to make dental crowns. Perhaps then you’ll learn to appreciate them more, and serve as a reminder to take better care of your teeth!

DENTAL CROWNS

Before we start, what exactly are dental crowns?

As the name indicates, a dental crown is a type of “crown” or cap, that covers a damaged or diseased tooth. The fundamental purpose of a dental crown is to restore the damaged tooth to a healthy functional state. They can also help protect a weak tooth from fracturing due to an accident or impact, replace a gap caused by cavities, cover a discolored tooth or cover a dental implant.

A dental crown not only strengthens the damaged tooth, but can also improve its appearance or alignment. Its multi-purpose nature makes dental crowns a staple tool for any dentist.

MATERIALS USED TO MAKE DENTAL CROWNS

Crowns need to be tough and durable, considering the environment they’ll be placed in.
Think about it, crowns are placed to cap the external enamel of your teeth. They’ll also be exposed to the different textures of foods and liquids of varying temperatures. Not to mention the chewing you’ll be doing over the course of your lifetime.

Therefore, dental crowns are commonly made from an alloy compound such as gold, silver, titanium or a combination of other metal alloys. Other tough materials include ceramic compounds such as zirconia and porcelain.

In general, metal alloys are the preferred choice for dental crowns due to their durability. Their only downside is their metallic color which is a stark contrast to the white enamel of your teeth. For dental crowns placed on your back teeth, that isn’t such an issue. However, for dental crowns placed in prominent locations (where its visible to the public), metallic crowns are not the preferred choice. In this case, ceramic crowns are more suitable as they can be made to match the color of your natural enamel.

To conclude, dental crowns are an ingenious solution to restore and improve your teeth. Their flexibility and durability makes them a staple treatment in almost every dental clinic.
