The Derawan islands have stole some of the spotlight in the
diving world. It’s a spot just East of
Borneo, with a coastline of white sands, tall palms and stilt houses.
Consisting of 31 islands to be exact, the Derawan Islands are mostly known for
Derawan itself, Sangalaki and Kakaban. The islands are blessed with tropical
warmth and pristine seas, filled with spectacular marine life that offers some
of Indonesia’s best and little-known diving packages. It’s also known as
Indonesia’s largest nesting site of the endangered green turtle, where over
15,000 females come to the archipelago annually to lay their eggs on the
beaches.

Sangalaki
This area is known for the large population of turtles and
manta rays you can see feeding here all year round. You can also visit the
turtle nursery run by the local government. As a bonus, whale sharks are a
common sight on the coast of the island.
Kakaban
Kakaban is known for its non-stinging jellyfish lake located
in the center of the island that has been there for centuries. On the outer
ring of the Kakaban island, you’ll find a wide diversity of corals, magnificent
caves and pelagics. Barracuda Point is also known for visits from large tuna, sharks
and schools of barracuda.
Panjang & Derawan Island
For those of you who love to micro dive, you’ll enjoy the
fantastic marine life in this macro heaven. Filled with the weirdest and most wonderful species, including Satomi
pygmies, ghost pipefish, sea dragons, blue ring octopus and tiger shrimps.
